We recently returned from a trip to New York and after seeing vendors sell pretzels on street corners I thought to try and make some. These simple yoghurt dough pretzels are soft and you can flavour them however you like by choosing different toppings!
Makes: 4
Prep: 30 mins Cook: 25 mins
Ingredients
- 1 cup wholemeal flour
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yoghurt
- 1/4-1/2 cup extra plain flour
- 1 small egg
Topping ideas:
- Sesame seeds
- Finely grated Parmesan cheese
- Mixture of sesame seeds, poppy seeds and onion powder
- Try making pizza pretzels by topping with tomato paste (instead of egg), cheese and olives before cooking
Method
- Preheat oven to 180ºC
- Line a baking tray with baking paper
- Mix together wholemeal flour, plain flour, salt, and baking powder in large bowl
- Add yoghurt and combine
- Flour bench top, remove mixture from bowl and kneed for about a minute. Work in more flour if needed. (The dough should be soft but not too sticky)
- Divide dough into 4 pieces and roll into balls
- For each ball (working on a floured surface with floured hands) roll into a long strip about 40cm long
- Take each strip and make into a pretzel shape. First bring one end into the middle to make a circle and press dough together to close
- Then take other end, wrap around the circle and secure. If it breaks, just press into place
- Move pretzels onto baking tray
- Lightly beat egg and spread onto pretzels
- Sprinkle with your desired toppings
- Cook for 25-30 minutes or until browned (30 minutes if you want them a little crunchier)
- Enjoy!
Notes
These yoghurt dough pretzels are great when served warm with some dip and veggies (why not check out our hummus dip).
