Yoghurt Dough Pretzels

We recently returned from a trip to New York and after seeing vendors sell pretzels on street corners I thought to try and make some. These simple yoghurt dough pretzels are soft and you can flavour them however you like by choosing different toppings!

Makes: 4
Prep: 30 mins   Cook: 25 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup wholemeal flour
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yoghurt
  • 1/4-1/2 cup extra plain flour
  • 1 small egg

Topping ideas:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • Mixture of sesame seeds, poppy seeds and onion powder
  • Try making pizza pretzels by topping with tomato paste (instead of egg), cheese and olives before cooking

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC
  2. Line a baking tray with baking paper
  3. Mix together wholemeal flour, plain flour, salt, and baking powder in large bowl
  4. Add yoghurt and combine
  5. Flour bench top, remove mixture from bowl and kneed for about a minute. Work in more flour if needed. (The dough should be soft but not too sticky)
  6. Divide dough into 4 pieces and roll into balls
  7. For each ball (working on a floured surface with floured hands) roll into a long strip about 40cm long
  8. Take each strip and make into a pretzel shape. First bring one end into the middle to make a circle and press dough together to closeMaking Yoghurt Dough Pretzels
  9. Then take other end, wrap around the circle and secure. If it breaks, just press into place
  10. Move pretzels onto baking tray
  11. Lightly beat egg and spread onto pretzels
  12. Sprinkle with your desired toppings
  13. Cook for 25-30 minutes or until browned (30 minutes if you want them a little crunchier)
  14. Enjoy!

Notes

These yoghurt dough pretzels are great when served warm with some dip and veggies (why not check out our hummus dip).
